This coffee comes from small farms located in the village of Samarkanda in the San Juan del Río Coco region. The coffee plants are grown along shade trees that include orange, banana, plantain, tamarind, and oak. The farmers have embraced sustainable and organic practices. In their words "Our roots are indigenous, and we want to change with the times and places in which we find ourselves. We were born in the dry lands of Cusmapa and San Lucas amid beans and corn, and we came to this community to be coffee growers. We changed these coffee fields, from coffee with chemicals to coffee which is diversified and organic. Changing, deepening our roots, is our secret to life.”
In addition to lending money to the farmers to bring in the harvest, the importer we’ve sourced from is also committed to sending profits back to the communities. This means small farmers will receive 3 payments for their coffee: when they turn their harvest into their organization´s collection center; when the coffee is placed on the ship; and profits when the coffee is ultimately sold to roasters.
This coffee is lively and light, a perfect transitional cup into the spring. It refreshes the palette with notes of hibiscus and honeysuckle, while keeping a smooth mouthfeel like milk chocolate.
